GKN is helping inspire young engineers by welcoming school children to See Inside Manufacturing (SIM) across the UK.

Eight GKN facilities are taking part in the SIM programme, which encourages schools to visit manufacturing sites and gain an insight into the careers on offer.

The Group’s support for the UK Government-backed scheme follows a summer of successful events aimed at encouraging young people to take up careers in engineering. These included Silver Sponsorship of Futures Day at Farnborough Airshow and headline sponsorship of Formula Student UK at Silverstone.

Jon Dennison, GKN Director – Government Affairs, said: “The UK manufacturing industry faces a shortage of technically qualified people with the skills we need for the future.

“It is vital we inspire the next generation about engineering as a career and about GKN as an employer. SIM helps to do both, giving these young people the chance to make an informed decision about an excellent and fulfilling career.

“The programme is also a key element in GKN’s broader relationship with local schools, colleges and communities, giving us a direct means to reach young people, talk to them in person and pass on our enthusiasm.”

GKN Aerospace facilities taking part are Filton – which is hosting four separate events – as well as Western Approach, Luton, Yeovil, and Kings Norton. Portsmouth and Cowes will be running events in the new year and GKN Driveline Birmingham will also welcome local schools.

It is the third year that GKN has been involved in SIM, and school visits will be held throughout October and November, as well as into next year.
