Shafts

Overview

Engine shafts are often slender and hollow and need to be able to withstand huge loads and torques. Precision manufacture of turbine shafts, compressor/fan driveshafts and stub shafts is an important area of specialisation at GKN Aerospace where more than 17 000 shafts have been supplied  for commercial and military aero engines. Our machine shops are equipped with state-of-the-art lathes and grinders for external and internal machining. External splines are produced with our without crowning and shot peening can be performed in hard to reach areas such are deep bores of only 2.5 mm in diameter. 

Our inspection equipment includes a precision measuring systems and specially designed tools such as magnetic inspection and etch-lines. Static and dynamic run-out inspection and low or high speed balancing is performed to extremely tight tolerances.
