Recent history and concern over terrorist activity has led to a growing interest in products that offer effective protection to travelling personnel. GKN Aerospace has been developing and manufacturing transparent armour – 'bullet resistant glass' for over 20 years – with production facilities in Kings Norton in the UK and Sao Paolo in Brazil and now Garden Grove, California.

GKN Aerospace products offer the highest levels of ballistic and artillery fragment protection for a vehicle's occupants. GKN Aerospace laminates also provide high visible light and infra-red light transmission properties for night vision compatibility and laser eye protection. Laminates can incorporate anti scratch and anti-reflection coatings and a de-icing heater system. All of these qualities are built in to windows that are as lightweight and as thin as possible to maximise the vehicle’s performance and endurance.

Significant investment in R&D combined with in-house ballistics test ranges in both the US and the UK, means the Company is able to thoroughly explore, assess and evaluate developments in glass, acrylic and polycarbonate materials and technologies to offer a market leading product range. These products meet the requirements of wide range of protection levels – from B2 to B7, and NATO standard STANAG 4569, levels 1,2 and 3.

Frank Bamford, Senior Vice President, Business Development and Strategy, comments: "This is a strategically important market for us. Our specialist skills and track record in the BRG market is complemented by our world lead in the field of military aircraft canopies, where a number of the requirements are similar. We draw on all our experience to ensure that those requiring protection whilst travelling today, benefit from the very best that technology and materials have to offer."
